What sort of opportunities for adult education will there be?
We are hoping to offer an adult B’nai mitzvah program that will allow anyone over the age of 18 to become empowered to lead the prayers, lein Torah (read in chant mode from the Scroll), read Hebrew, and give a D’var Torah (homily or sermon). The length of this program will most likely be two years.
In addition, Rabbi Seidel will be teaching courses in Basic Judaism, Prayer and Customs, Talmud, Bible, Commentaries, Mysticism, Halakha, Jewish History, Folklore, and Jewish Music. Other offerings may include: Judaism and Buddhism, Judaism and Christianity, New Jewish Theology, and Women in Jewish Law.
We envision a larger academy of Jewish studies through Or haGan that works cooperatively and collaboratively with other Jewish institutions in Eugene and Lane County. The Rabbi is also committed to developing and supporting interfaith services and conversations, and a strong outreach program bringing classes in Judaic studies to area churches.
